Sentara Heart provides local access to the only regional, high volume Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program. TAVR is a procedure that can replace a diseased heart valve using a catheter-delivery approach through a small incision in the thigh (transfemoral) or chest (transapical). While much less invasive than open-heart surgery, TAVR can dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life when traditional open-heart surgery is not an option because of age or health. Since the first procedure in 2011, Sentara Heart has performed over 340 TAVR procedures.
