The hospitals are part of the LIFENET system, Sentara Heart was first in the state to launch, to help diagnose heart attacks in the field and transmit EKG data to regional emergency departments. Because of the efforts at Sentara Heart, the median door to balloon time has been reduced in Hampton Roads Sentara facilities for patients in Southeastern Virginia who experience a STEMI. A STEMI is ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, type of heart attack that occurs when a coronary artery suddenly becomes at least partially blocked by a blood clot, causing at least some of the heart muscle being supplied by that artery to die.
